Special IRC Servers for Scouts

There are many different IRC networks. The largest are called Efnet, IRCnet and Undernet. Each of these networks has its own chat servers. Large chat networks tend to be slow, and loosely monitored, and they have chat areas which are unsafe or not intended for kids. There are also a few smaller, specialized IRC networks which try to cope with these problems.

The primary chat network we have selected for JOTI is ScoutLink. This is a special worldwide chat network run by Scouts for Scouts, with security-enforced servers. ScoutLink is considered to be very safe and the conversation on the channels is open, friendly and polite. Although you may find scouts and JOTI-dedicated channels on other chat networks and platforms, we recommend ScoutLink as the place to be in order to take part in this years JOTI. This will also be the only network where we will be officially present.

In the table below, you can find a list of all ScoutLink IRC servers. This list is being continually being kept up to date and expanded. Please also make a note of the servers IP number, in case the connection to your desired server does not work. You can type in both "/server au04.scoutlink.net" or "/server 203.29.98.200" to get connected.

Important note from ScoutLink:
The Clone limit on the ScoutLink Network is 25 pc's from 1 ip this year. If you are connecting with more pc's you have to mail joti@scoutlink.net with the ip you will be using during JOTI, your location e.g. UK, NL, CH etc and the number of pc's you will be using for connecting to the ScoutLink network.

All server names are in the form "country number.scoutlink.net"

Please check out their latest version on http://www.scoutlink.net/pages.php?show=webpagina&id=5&language=EN

Random scoutlink servers are reachable via

chat.scoutlink.netfor all
chat.eu.scoutlink.netfor Europe
chat.am.scoutlink.netfor America
chat.au.scoutlink.netfor Australia
chat.scand.scoutlink.netfor Scandinavia

Connecting to one of these will return a random ip of a server in that part of the world. If one connects to chat.eu.scoutlink.net, they will randomly get an ip of a server somewhere in europe.
  1. All servers still are random available via chat.scoutlink.net
  2. Same for all *.scoutlink.org adresses
  3. DNS will be updated every time a server fails during joti, so all connects should return the IP of a working server
  4. A retry should work if a connect fails (will give out another IP number)
